The inaugural assembly of the newly formed European Club Association (ECA) took place yesterday.
Replacing the G14, which failed to represent the smaller clubs, the ECA will accommodate 103 clubs and provide a more uniform front. After signing a Memorandum of Understanding with UEFA earlier this year, the ECA will provide solitary representation of European clubs, while acknowledging that the UEFA and FIFA will continue to govern European-level and international-level football, respectively.
Eleven members were elected to the ECA's Executive Board, including delegates from FC Bayern München, FC Internazionole Milano, FC Porto, Liverpool FC, Maccabi Haifa FC, NK Dinamo Zagreb, Olympique Lyonnais, Rangers FC, RSC Anderlecht, Real Madrid CF, and Rosenborg BK. Shy of one member, a Strategy Council has been defined, with a Chairman, Vice-Chairman and General Secretary yet to be determined.
Rick Parry, Liverpool Chief Executive, told the Telegraph that the ECA will provide "greater credibility" than the G14 because of its inclusion of a broad range of clubs. John McClelland, Director of the Rangers, re-iterated Perry's opinion.
Although all ECA members were invited to attend the assembly, three of five English clubs failed to show; delegates from Arsenal and Newcastle did not attend, along with Chelsea Chief Executive, Peter Kenyon.
