As British minister Richard Caborn has supported the Independent Sport Review for changes made in football, the Premier League is to meet the minister early in the new year.
The Daily Telegraph reported that, at a meeting of the 20 league clubs two weeks ago, concerns raised over the way Caborn was backing the Independent Sport Review even though they believe the review is a threat to the Premier League's interests.
Premier League chairman Sir David Richards, a close personal friend and ally of Caborn, was put under pressure to persuade Caborn to change his stance.
The Premier League opposes the report, believing it an attempt by UEFA to grab power from domestic European leagues. Among the proposals are a salary cap and home-grown player quotas which the Premier League believes they are unworkable.
Premier League officials have been working hard to isolate the sports minister in secret negotiations with advisers to Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown.
